Parent’s Leave Increases to 9 Weeks

Starting from 1 August 2024, the Parent’s leave will be extended from 7 weeks to 9 weeks for children born or adopted after this date. This increase aims to provide more support and bonding time for families during the crucial early years of a child’s life.

Who Can Claim the Additional Leave?

You can claim the extra 2 weeks’ Parent’s leave if:

  • Your child is under the age of 2 on 1 August 2024, or
  • Your adopted child has been placed with your family for less than 2 years on 1 August 2024.

It’s important to note that the additional leave must be used on or before your child’s second birthday or within 2 years of the adoption placement.

Parent’s Benefit Increase

In addition to the extended leave, Parent’s Benefit will also increase from 7 weeks to 9 weeks for each parent, provided you meet the qualification criteria. This paid benefit, which is €274 per week, is available to employees and self-employed individuals who have sufficient social insurance (PRSI) contributions.

Understanding Paid Parent’s Leave

Paid Parent’s Leave:

  • Is available during the first two years of a child’s life or within two years of the placement of an adopted child.
  • Is different from Parental Leave, which entitles parents to four months of unpaid leave under EU legislation.
  • May be topped up by employers, although they are not required to pay staff during Parent’s Leave.
